There are two approaches to Jarvis Island, one from the Vermont side and one from the New Hampshire side. Boats can only be launched from the New Hampshire side (Ashley Ferry Landing), as there is no boat launch and a small steep bank on the Vermont side.

Directions to Jarvis Island from the New Hampshire side (best bet):

  • Take I-91 North from the Massachusetts / Vermont border for approximately 51 miles.
  • Take exit 8 (VT-131, Ascutney, Claremont NH).
  • At the bottom of the ramp bear right onto VT-131. Go about 0.3 mi to the first set of stop lights (US-5).
  • Continue about 0.9 mi through the lights, crossing the river, to the next set of lights.
  • Turn right onto Route 12A and continue about 3.0 miles. The landing will be on the right and is marked with a state boat launch sign.
  • Turn right and follow the dirt road to the boat landing. In our experience it is safe to park at the landing.
  • Jarvis Island is just upstream of the landing and is only reachable by boat.

Directions to Jarvis Island / Weathersfield Bow from the Vermont side:

  • Take I-91 North from the Massachusetts / Vermont border for approximately 51 miles.
  • Take exit 8 (VT-131, Ascutney, Claremont NH).
  • At the bottom of the ramp bear right onto VT-131. Go about 0.3 mi to the first set of stop lights (US-5).
  • Turn right onto US-5 South. Go about 3.9 miles until you see Ferry Road on the left.
  • Ferry Road is a bumpy, crappy dirt road that leads to Weathersfield Bow and ends at the river.
  • Jarvis Island is just upstream of the Bow and is only reachable by boat.

Note: Weathersfield Bow is approximately three miles south of Wilgus State Park. A canoe is about the only thing you can launch from the Vermont side. Launching from Vermont is nothing short of an adventure... so if you choose this route all I can say is... "You've been warned."
